Australia has the second highest average wealth in the world at US $397,000 behind only Switzerland with US $540,010. The Credit Suisse 2011 Global Wealth report, which surveyed the world’s 4.5 billion adults, also revealed that Australia’s median wealth is the highest in the world at US $220,000.

A large part of the average wealth gain can be attributed to a 20 % jump in the AUD against the USD, as well as income gains on the back of solid resource-driven economic strength, the report said. Australia also fares positively in terms of its spread of wealth compared to other developed countries.

For example, US mean wealth stands at US $250,000 while its median wealth is only US $52,000. In Australia the mean wealth is US $400,00 while median wealth is US $220,000.
