Baby Bonus Reduction

Government assistance is available for parents with new babies, but some of these concessions have been cut or slowed down to help reduce government expenditure.

The Baby Bonus is one casualty. From 1 September 2012, the baby bonus has been reduced to $5,000 per annum.

New parents can choose to apply for the Baby Bonus or Paid Parenting Leave (subject to eligibility rules). With the cut in the bonus the paid leave may offer a higher amount for many parents. New parents should look at the numbers carefully.
