Zurich’s Matt Drennan bemoans the lopsidedness of the local economy but believes there is reason for optimism in 2012.Having read a lot of commentary on the current Australian Government’s problems and key drivers, I have come to the conclusion that the fundamental issue is relatively simple. They are more interested in the problem of how the economic pie is distributed rather than balancing this with a focus on how to grow the pie. This is reflected in a rising crescendo of criticism from prominent business leaders and lobby groups, and plummeting productivity. Investors Belt JB Hi-Fi For Bad Tidings

JB Hi-Fi shares have tanked in early trade after the retailer surprised the market late yesterday with a pre-Christmas downgrade that shattered hopes the festive season would save retailers. Shares in the electronics retailer plunged $1.96, or 13.1 per cent, to $13.04 in morning trade, falling to their lowest since June 2009. Other retailers fell sharply too, with department stores Myer and David Jones both down more than 4 per cent. Bell Potter Securities retail analyst Paresh Patel said that if JB Hi Fi is struggling other retailers must be doing worse. Read the rest of entry »

Ask The Guru A Question

Question: Every 3 years I ensure that I make a small income. In that year I liquidate part of my assets and pay little CGT. I then contribute the money into my super fund. I just follow my accountant’s advice. I can only do this because my Family Trust can stream CGT to one beneficiary and normal income to another beneficiary. Can I still stream with the new laws? Also do I still get tax deductions for my super contributions? Read the rest of entry »
